Overview. A 2-yr position is available for a postdoctoral associate to join a collaborative project jointly funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the North Temperate Lakes Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) site. Research will focus on understanding and explaining spatial and temporal patterns of water clarity among Wisconsin lakes, and exploring implications of future climate and land-use scenarios for lake water clarity. Identifying spatial and temporal patterns in water clarity and linking them with landscape and climate drivers requires a multi-scaled, regional approach. The postdoctoral associate will use field-measured and remotely sensed data to determine how lake water clarity varies over time and space in Wisconsin; determine what landscape, lake and climatic factors explain observed patterns of variability; assess whether the relative influence of lake and landscape characteristics varies with climate; evaluate the accuracy of remotely sensed estimates of lake water clarity; develop statewide scenarios to explore the implications of climate and land-use change for lake water clarity; consider the future production of hydrologic and other ecosystem services in Wisconsin; and communicate research orally and through peer-reviewed journal articles.
The postdoctoral associate will be based in the laboratory of Dr. Monica G. Turner, whose research group focuses on diverse projects in landscape and ecosystem ecology. The associate will also collaborate closely with Dr. Steven R. Greb and other scientists at the Wisconsin DNR, and with Dr. Emily H. Stanley and other researchers in the UW-Madison Center for Limnology.
Qualifications. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in ecology, limnology, geography or a related field prior to appointment. Candidates should have experience with landscape ecology, freshwater ecology, geographic information science and spatial analysis, including use of Landsat data. Strong quantitative skills are critical, and prior research experience in land-water interactions is an asset. We especially encourage applications from outstanding candidates who work well in a collaborative setting and have excellent communication and writing skills.
The desired starting date is January 6, 2014, or another mutually agreeable date.
