Opportunity Type:

Start Date: September 2022

Location: Miami, Florida, USA

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Gaiser Aquatic Ecology Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences and Institute of Environment at Florida International University. The postdoc will conduct palaeoecological research in the Big Cypress National Preserve to develop targets for water quality protection as the region undergoes hydrologic restoration. This work builds on surveys, experiments, and paleoecological studies of benthic algae (primarily diatoms) conducted by our laboratory throughout the Everglades region. It will leverage rich long-term (20-year) datasets documenting the variability in benthic algae abundance and composition and key environmental drivers. The candidate will also collaborate with the Florida Coastal Everglades Long-term Ecological Research program (FCE LTER). Candidates with a background in diatom taxonomy and ecology and paleoecology/limnology are encouraged to apply for this position.

A PhD in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences or a related field is required. Experience with management of large datasets, quantitative analysis of diatom or other algae data, field and analytical methods in paleoecology, and R programing is desired. The selected candidate will collaborate with members of the lab and federal sponsoring agency scientists to assess current knowledge of the region through a review of literature and available data, retrieve sediment cores, and count and identify diatoms. The post-doc will lead the analysis and interpretation of data, and collaborative development of peer reviewed publications, project reports, presentations, and other communication materials. The post-doc will also be provided opportunities to develop proposals for extramural/independent funding.

This position will be based at the FIU Modesto A. Maidique Campus in Miami, FL, USA. The appointment is available for a one-year term with potential for renewal for up to 2 years based on satisfactory performance and available funding. We look forward to receiving your application. Please submit a short letter of interest, resume, and three publications, names and contact information for three references to Job Opening ID 526617 at https://facultycareers.fiu.edu/. Screening of applicants will begin immediately, and the closing date is 1 July 2022. For any questions related to this position, please contact Dr. Evelyn Gaiser at gaisere@fiu.edu.
