About the Pacific Northwest Research Station
The PNW Research Station is one of seven research units in the USDA Forest Service. The
Forest Service conducts the most extensive and productive program of integrated forestry
research in the world. The scientific information produced by the station has application on
public, private, and tribal lands in the Pacific Northwest, elsewhere in the United States, and
throughout the world. The station is a leader in the scientific study of natural resources. It
generates and communicates impartial knowledge to help people understand and make informed
choices about natural resource management and sustainability. The PNW Research Station has
about 300 permanent and temporary employees in professional, administrative, research,
technical, and clerical positions located in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The work activities
of the station attract considerable interest from Congress, special interest groups, and the public.

About the Communications and Applications Group

The Communications and Applications Group helps the station communicate science externally
to many types of audiences through production of publications and other products, development
of partnerships, media and congressional relations, technology transfer, and knowledge
exchange. The staff communicates science information through printed publications, Web
content, online graphics, video, social media, webinars, workshops, and partnership and
education programs. We work to ensure our products are suited for their audience’s level of
technical expertise; are timely; high quality; and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction
from scientists, readers, and other users of science products.

About the Position

We are looking for a writer-editor with experience translating complex biological, physical, and
social science research related to forests and ranges into text easily understood by target
audiences including policymakers, interagency resource managers, and the public. The writer-
editor:

  • Works in a creative team environment and collaborates with other writers, scientists
    (subject matter experts), editors, and visual information specialists to produce printed
    and online publications, Web content, infographics, newsletters, and brochures.
  • Ensures that documents progress in a timely manner from initial draft through final published work in adherence to established publication guidelines.
  • Possesses advanced writing and editing skills necessary to review documents for completeness, tone, and context; and excellent communication skills enabling them to work closely with subject matter experts to ensure technical accuracy of the final product.
  • Works to cultivate partnerships with customers and develops solutions to meet their
    needs.
