The NSF funded Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) REU Site “Understanding biological responses to global change in a field station community” gives students an opportunity to conduct full-time research in collaboration with our field station’s outstanding group of resident faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. KBS is a premier site for field experimental research in aquatic and terrestrial ecology that takes advantage of a diversity of managed and unmanaged ecosystems. The varied habitats of KBS includes forests, old fields, streams, wetlands, lakes, and agricultural lands. We are Michigan State University’s largest off-campus education complex.

REU participants will receive a $6,000 stipend plus room and board at KBS, funding towards travel costs, and funding for research supplies.
No prior research experience is required to participate in the KBS REU program.
Our program generally does not accept undergraduate students from R1 institutions, with exceptions. These are “Doctoral Universities- Very high research activity.” A full list of R1 institutions can be found here: https://carnegieclassifications.acenet.edu/institutions/?basic2021__du%5B%5D=15
We especially encourage students from historically underrepresented groups and/or minority-serving institutions, first generation college students, transfer students, and students from institutions with limited research opportunities to apply for our program.
