One postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Sea Level Solutions Center at Florida International University (FIU) (https://slsc.fiu.edu) to conduct research in the Florida Everglades, beginning immediately. FIU is a public research university in Miami with a highly diverse, vibrant, and growing faculty and student body located near the eastern boundary of the Everglades. This position is affiliated with the Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research program (http://fcelter.fiu.edu/) and Southeast Environmental Research Center (https://sercweb.fiu.edu).
The candidate will:
- support field and outdoor laboratory experiments to test effects of salinity and inundation on coastal peat marshes,
- apply integrative field and experimental data to apply a mechanistic soil carbon dynamics model to represent responses to changes in salinity and hydrology and
- collaborate with agency and academic scientists to apply an existing probabilistic model for coastal vegetation change at the landscape scale.
The selected candidate will join an existing collaborative team of graduate students, FIU faculty, as well as scientists from the South Florida Water Management District, Everglades National Park, and the Everglades Foundation, with a shared goal of understanding and forecasting peat collapse and carbon loss in coastal wetland ecosystems exposed to sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion.
A PhD in ecology or geosciences is required. Field experience is required. Some experience developing ecological models is required, preferably to include Stella®. Desired skills include proficiency in computational modeling, R packages, or Python.
Interested applicants should visit the lab (http://wetland.fiu.edu), affiliated program and center websites before applying. The position is available for a one-year term with possibility for renewal based satisfactory performance and available funding. For priority consideration, please submit a short letter of interest and CV by November 14, 2018 to Dr. Tiffany Troxler (troxlert@fiu.edu). Position open until filled.
