Since 1988, the LUQ LTER has collected diverse data on the ecosystem dynamics of the Luquillo Experimental Forest (“El Yunque”) operating as part of a network of sites in the US mainland and adjacent waters, Alaska, the South Pacific, and Antarctica. The IM is an essential team member guiding the collection, storage, and sharing of ecological data. We seek a dynamic individual who can work effectively with a diverse group of researchers, students, and technicians to achieve LUQ research objectives.

Essential Qualifications

An M.Sc. in computer science, environmental science, biology, chemistry, or a related field.

Be able (to learn) to:

  • Develop and implement data pipelines for various applications, including a variety of ecological surveys.
  • Collaborate with site researchers, students, and technicians to establish protocols for conducting QA/QC on data streams.
  • Update and manage the Luquillo LTER’s data repository on the Environmental Data Initiative (EDI) data repository. This involves updating EML (Ecological Metadata Language) documents via EzEML and uploading EML metadata and data to the repository.
  • Manage content of luquillo.lter.network website with WordPress.
  • Manage an AWS EC2 instance hosting websites, web apps, and databases.
  • Manage and maintain operational databases for environmental observations using postgresql and postgREST
  • Create and execute data and metadata migration plans to long-term data repositories, ensuring adherence to established standards and protocols; troubleshoot network data flow connections and database errors.
  • Represent the Luquillo LTER Information Management team at national network meetings (online or in person).
  • Help create reports for NSF reporting requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Spanish-English
  • Experience with Python and R scripting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication/documentation skills
  • Ability to lead the development of comprehensive synthesis datasets, such as the Luquillo LTER Signature dataset, by integrating decades of data from multiple sources.
  • Utilize Generative AI and Emerging Technologies- Leverage cutting-edge AI technologies, including OpenAI API, Google Gemini, and other open-source language models, to develop custom solutions for data management challenges.
