The Scientific Specialist will support research operations at the University of Virginia’s Coastal Research Center located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The Scientific Specialist will join the LTER staff to provide logistical support for long-term project operations and related research initiatives. The Scientific Specialist will assist with sampling programs related to water quality, coastal habitat, and meteorological data. S/he will help maintain deployed sensors and long-term data sets. Both field and laboratory duties will be required, and the ability to contribute to data management, sensor maintenance, and GIS records of research is strongly desired.
The preferred candidate is expected to:
- be familiar with best practices for responsible handling of samples and data,
- have basic coding and/or small electronics experience,
- know basic GIS mapping skills, especially RTK, and
- have boating experience.
A Bachelor’s degree is required, and a background in ecology, biology, environmental sciences, computer sciences, or related fields is preferred.
The Specialist is expected to be on site at the Coastal Research Center (Oyster, VA) during the summer field season. Academic year arrangements, when Specialist focus shifts to laboratory maintenance, data processing, and GIS mapping, are negotiable.
