The Strategic and Implementation Plan (SIP) for the Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER): Research and Education 2011. This document summarizes and then details strategies for building on past success to realize the vision of the LTER. Activities are prioritized in five key areas: Research, Education, Communication, Information Management, and Coordination with other Networks. The time frame for this plan is five years, to be updated annually.

The LTER Bylaws were created in response to recommendations from the Twenty-year Review of the LTER Program, which took place in 2002. The goal of the bylaws is to institutionalize operational norms for the LTER Network.

An outline of the major milestones ocuring in the 20+ year history of the LTER Network, from the 1970s to present.

The US LTER network has grown rapidly over the past 20 years, both in size and in the scope of its activities. This growth is generally welcomed and is viewed overall as a mark of the success of the network and its individual sites and investigators. From an initial group of 6 LTER sites and a few dozen investigators in 1980, the network has grown to 24 sites in 2001, involving the work of hundreds of scientists, students, and teachers from scores of institutions at all levels of research and education. The LTER enterprise is unique in the ecological community.

Report from the 20 year review of the LTER program

1. Core Research Questions – Initially, at least, only a modest number of research questions can be asked in a uniform and coordinated fashion at a majority of participating sites. The following are five areas of core research suggested for a majority of the sites, whether they are focused on terrestrial or aquatic systems.

Executive Summary – Beginning in 1998, the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network formally expanded its education efforts to include K-12 students and teachers mainly through the Schoolyard (SLTER) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Each LTER site designed its own program in relation to the ecological research conducted at the site and the particular need and resources of its local school district and community.

Summarizes and compares information between sites, such as number of Pis, average dollar amount per PI, and number of graduate students at each site.

This report follows the Shugart Committee Report which identified the scientific issues being addressed by the LTER sites and made recommendations for network-wide capabilities to address those issues. The following is a summary of those issues and recommendations to lead to the charge given to the Technology Committee (TC).
