Introducing the LTER Photo Contest, 2025! Spurred on by the great images submitted last year and the fierce site vs. site competition that took place on our Instagram page to pick a winner, we’re back with a new theme!

This Year’s Theme:

Best day in the field

Worst day in the field

That’s right—two categories this year: show us your best day in the field, and show us your worst!

Key Dates

Submission Period: September 2 to October 3, 2025

Voting: begins mid October. Stay tuned!

Who can submit photos?

Anyone can submit photos to the contest. Photos MUST be taken at an LTER site or while performing LTER work. Beyond that, submissions are welcome from the greenest undergrads to the grizzliest PI’s. Maximum limit of three photos submitted per category or per person. We want to see your best and worst, not your fourth best or worst!

How the contest works

First, submissions are open until October 3.

Once photos are submitted, a committee of LTER graduate students vote behind the scenes on which photos will represent each site in each category. There is only one representative photo per site in each category!

With the photos selected, sites placed in a bracket and go head to head in competition where the public votes on which photos advance to the next round. Votes are tallied for one week per round, and the winner each week advances to compete against the next site. Eventually, one site emerges victorious!
