Leveraging PASTA and EML-based Workflow Tools for LTER Data Synthesis

Abstract The NIS PASTA framework is nearing its first production release in December 2012, and LTER sites have made great progress over the past several years in getting EML-described core data online. LTER site Information Managers and others in the eco-informatics community have also made progress in developing or adapting software to perform analytical workflows… Read more »

Enhancement of the LTER Controlled Vocabulary to Support Data Synthesis

Goals: The credo of this working group is that: Scientists seeking data should be able to efficiently and reliably locate LTER datasets through searching or browsing. In 2011, the LTER Controlled Vocabulary Working Group made substantial progress towards this goal (report attached). That progress included creating a thesaurus of over 600 keywords (http://vocab.lternet.edu) and using… Read more »

Managing sensor networks and data: Best practices for LTER

We are proposing to assemble a working group of LTER information managers and representatives from other groups with experience in sensor networks to develop a best practices guide for LTER on managing sensor networks and data. The working group will examine the various sensor network strategies and applications currently in use within the LTER network… Read more »

GeoNIS Implementation with PASTA

The GeoNIS is intended to be the spatial data component of the network-wide NIS development. The project exposes and merges heterogeneous GIS data from the 26 LTER sites into a standard format available for the Network and broader community to perform synthetic analysis, data discovery, and visualization. Goal 3.1 of the NIS is to increase… Read more »

Defining Checks to Ensure High Quality LTER Data Packages

Summary: The “quality” of a data package is a reflection of how well it may be used for a specific purpose. The emerging LTER Network Information System (NIS) is being developed to ingest EML datasets and process them in automated workflows. To do so, a data package must include access to data, complete metadata (defined… Read more »

SiteDB redesign to accommodate ClimDB/HydroDB and StreamChemDB

Summary: This proposed workshop will review the current design of SiteDB and recommend design changes to facilitate the integration of value-added databases, ClimDB/HydroDB and StreamChemDB, into the Network Information System (NIS). The work will focus on the redesign of SiteDB and the development of an EML template to accommodate descriptive metadata from these value-added databases.

Web Services

Web Services Working Group Product-Oriented Working Group Support Request and Statement of Work Summary Statement The Web Services Working Group (WSWG) was established at the 2009 IMC meeting in response to a recognized need for guidelines in implementing a web service-oriented architecture in the LTER Network Information System. The WSWG has also been tasked by… Read more »

Finding the Data: Enhancing the Utility of the LTER Controlled Vocabulary

Unfortunately, efficient and reliable searches are not currently possible because of eclectic application of keywords in LTER metadata. Most existing keywords are used by only a single LTER site, or worse yet, in only a single dataset, making them unsuitable for identifying data for cross-site syntheses. To address this problem, the LTER Information Management Committee… Read more »

Develop an LTER NIS Best Practices for Designing and Writing Workflow Scripts in the PASTA Framework

The PASTA Framework infrastructure of the LTER Network Information System (NIS) will support the automated execution of site provided scripts to simplify the process of creating and updating LTER synthetic and derived data products.  Scripts will be required to meet specific criteria to operate successfully in the PASTA Framework environment.  Such criteria will necessitate training… Read more »

LTERMapS Phase 2

The purpose of the LTERMapS project is to provide a data discovery and cartography tool for integration into the NIS through linkages with EML and PASTA. The project will offer detailed information for each LTER site using a common mapping interface for all sites.  The following data will be included: all information currently available with… Read more »
