General Summary:

The Fond du Lac Watershed Specialist is responsible for implementing the Band’s long-term reservation water quality monitoring program, including field and laboratory analyses, as well as managing and analyzing all data collected and preparing reports to management, tribal leadership, and federal funding sources. The Watershed Specialist is also responsible for implementing the tribal nonpoint source management program, seeking and securing outside funding for projects supporting the water program, and representing the Band in multiple interagency collaborations with tribal, state and federal partners. As a member of the Fond du Lac Resource Management Division, this position assists other RMD staff members as needed.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Implement ongoing lake and stream monitoring program, collecting water samples for physical and chemical data, biological samples, performing habitat assessments, laboratory analysis (chemistries and microscopic), and data entry.
  • Assist Wetlands Specialist in performing wetland delineations, including soil, plant and hydrologic surveys; erosion inspections on construction sites; wetlands assessments and monitoring.
  • Work with other Resource Management Division staff as needed to perform hydrologic surveys, GPS locating, and GIS mapping of aquatic resources.
  • Work with OWP team to identify, plan and implement appropriate restoration projects for impaired aquatic resources.
  • Implement tribal Nonpoint Source Management Program, monitoring the effectiveness of BMPs associated with forestry, road, and hydro modification projects.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.

Physical Requirements:

  • Will be expected to do various physical activities involved in field work on lakes, streams and wetlands, including walking, lifting, paddling a canoe, handling field gear and equipment.
  • Must be able to swim.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science or related discipline with five or more years’ work experience in the environmental or natural resources field is required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Computer skills and experience with GIS/GPS technology is required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, databases and/or data entry, spreadsheets and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Experience with field and laboratory methods, including basic chemistry and taxonomy is required.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring technology, including data loggers, multiprobes, GIS/GPS technology, hydro acoustics is required.
  • Experience with environmental data management and analysis, graphical display required.
  • Experience with ecological restoration project management preferred.
  • Knowledge of Native American communities, culture, customs and beliefs is preferred.
  • The watershed specialist will be expected to attend professional meetings and training workshops in related fields.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.

  • Travel is required.
