About HUE

Two post-doctoral fellowship positions are available at Arizona State University with the Healthy Urban Environments (HUE) initiative. HUE aims to serve as a solutions-focused research, policy and technology incubator to rapidly develop, test, and deploy heat-mitigation and air-quality improvement strategies and technologies. This initiative will convene education, research and discovery to empower innovative solutions to mitigate urban heat and air quality and ensure Maricopa’s County continued economic growth through improved quality of life of our region’s residents. HUE is launching a public-private partnership that establishes the Phoenix Metropolitan area as a national model for pro-active, evidence-based research in thermal comfort and air quality management. HUE is funded by the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority.

Job Description

Under the supervision of HUE co-directors Charles Redman and Matt Fraser, the HUE Postdoctoral Fellow will:

  • Engage in use-inspired research on urban heat and air quality mitigation.
  • Work with HUE-funded pilot projects to compile, analyze, and publish data, resources and solutions generated from HUE-sponsored research and technology development activities.
  • Help to develop visualizations, research summaries, reports, or other synthetic products for use in HUE workshops, meetings, events and resources.
  • Have the opportunity to serve in a convergent role for integrating independent projects into cohesive community-oriented solutions across a variety of projects, disciplines and partners related to urban heat and air quality in the Phoenix Metro Area.

Essential Duties

Conduct outstanding research; manage special projects; support day-to-day program operations; contribute to HUE’s broader goals and accomplishments; analyze and synthesize outcomes, results, data, and other products in publications and reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants will have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date of the position.
  • Applicants must have training or experience in one or more of the following disciplines: sustainability, climate science, urban heat, air quality, urban studies, environmental engineering or related field.
  • Evidence of ability to conduct independent research, to collaborate across disciplines, work with partners and stakeholders, and publish research results. Desired Qualifications
  • This postdoctoral fellowship will focus on conducting independent research in urban heat and air quality while also supporting the operations and success of the HUE initiative. An ideal candidate will therefore have a strong record of achievement in interdisciplinary scholarly activities, project management and science communication.
  • Experience engaging with non-academic audiences, partners, and stakeholders such as local municipal agencies, non-profits, industry and/or community members is a plus.
  • An ideal candidate will also demonstrate experience in one or more of the following desired skills: project management, research synthesis, inter- and trans-disciplinary research, technical and non-technical writing, and science communication.
  • Mentoring of students and co-/authorship of peer-reviewed publications and presentations will be strongly encouraged.

Eligibility and Award Terms

Salary is commensurate with experience, with a range of $47,476 to $50,000 annually. Fellowship term is one year with the potential for renewal based on satisfactory performance and the availability of continued funding.
