The Central Arizona–Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research project (CAP LTER) seeks a Site Manager to coordinate research for an extensive, interdisciplinary, long-term project. CAP LTER has been funded by the National Science Foundation since 1997 to study the urban ecology of the greater Phoenix region and surrounding desert. The project involves faculty, post-doctoral research associates, graduate students, and undergraduates from a range of disciplines in the social, physical, biological, and engineering sciences as well as community partners from public, tribal, and private institutions. The position therefore entails considerable interaction and communication with units throughout the university, external agencies, and public and private sector representatives.
Essential Duties
- As a member of the CAP LTER management team, provides input on most aspects of the project.
- Supervises 6-10 employees depending on project activities.
- Manages major CAP infrastructure, including labs, offices, storage facilities, and vehicles.
- Processes incoming data and works with CAP LTER Information Manager to document and archive data.
- Secures and maintains agreements with municipalities, agencies, and other entities as required for site access and data collection.
- Provides primary oversight and management of 12-15 sub-projects in diverse areas, for example biotic sampling, stormwater monitoring, flux tower data acquisition, soil sampling, plant growth measurements, and pentennial surveying of the entire study area, among others.
- Travels to various field sites.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field AND three years of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Master’s degree in a related field AND one year of experience in research, information analysis or program evaluation; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Ph.D. or M.S. in ecology, environmental science, hydrology, geography, environmental engineering, or a related field
- Experience in leading, coordinating, and/or conducting independent research, from research design, to field or laboratory data collection, to data analysis and presentation, to publication
- Experience in data processing, statistical analysis, geospatial analysis, and/or modeling
- Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in outreach to non-academic partners
- Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and techniques of ecosystem science, urban ecology, plant or animal ecology, or physical geography
- Experience working in interdisciplinary teams or with diverse groups of people and sectors
- Experience in supervising
Working Environment
Activities are performed either in an office setting or in the field at multiple outdoor sites, and include: standing for varying lengths of time and walking moderate distances to perform work, lifting up to 25 pounds, communicating to perform essential functions. The incumbent must also obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license to drive to various field sites.

The CAP LTER Program is administered through the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS). GIOS conducts research, education, and problem-solving related to sustainability, with a special focus on urban environments. The Institute initiates and nurtures work on issues of sustainability across many departments on the four campuses of ASU, and collaborates with other academic institutions, governments, businesses and industries, and community groups locally, nationally, and globally.
