As a group, the 25 sites that comprise the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network are some of the most intensively studied ecosystems in the world.

The study of these ecosystems provides the scientific community, policy makers, and society with the knowledge and predictive understanding necessary to conserve, protect, and manage the nation’s critical ecosystems, their biodiversity, and the services they provide.
