The influence of changes in terrestrial plant community structure on aquatic ecosystem function across the LTER network.

We held a workshop at Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) LTER April 19-22, 2007. Our primary objectives were to: 1) explore effects of changes in terrestrial plant species composition on aquatic ecosystem function across sites within the LTER Network; 2) initiate a cross-site synthesis project with other LTER graduate students; 3) establish a framework for future research collaborations; and 4) present findings at international meetings and publish findings in a peer-reviewed journal, such as Ecosystems or Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

The Disappearing Snow and Ice Final Report

This workshop was organized and convened by MCM (Andrew Fountain) and PAL (Hugh
Ducklow). The purpose of the workshop was to examine the role of diminished snow and ice on
ecosystem structure and function and on ecosystem services across the diverse habitats found in
the LTER Network. The longer-term goal is to synthesize existing knowledge and mine
available data through follow up working groups (we will propose a session for the ASM). The
trends, rates and some causes of loss of the three principal cryosphere elements (snow, ice and

Maps and Locals Workshop Report

The MALs project and the workshop were motivated by the dramatic and rapid changes being observed across the LTER network and the need to understand these changes in the context of a “couple social-ecological systems” (SES) framework. The current state of SES science suggests there is a critical need for more robust interdisciplinary approaches to investigating human-environment interactions.
