Martin Volaric (UVA Environmental Sciences) & Eli Stine (Music)
Researchers studying intertidal oyster reefs are using sound recordings as a proxy for reef activity. During Summer 2018, researchers at the VCR-LTER made a series of recordings with two goals in mind:
1) Pair sound with environmental measurements to study how reefs respond to abiotic drivers
2) Separate the natural patterns of sound in different reef layer recordings, then map them to musical sound sources to create sonic art.
Ecological insights will be published in a marine science journal. The music component will be included in Stine’s dissertation on composition and computer technologies.
