POSITION DESCRIPTION
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The LTER Program was established by the National Science Foundation in 1980 to study ecological processes operating on decadal-to-century time scales. The program now includes a network of 28 diverse sites across the U.S. and engages thousands of researchers and students. The LTER Network Office supports multiple simultaneous synthesis working groups (https://lternet.edu/current-working-groups/) that develop generalizable insights and propose new theory drawing on decades of data in LTER’s five core focus areas (https://lternet.edu/core-research-areas/): primary productivity, populations, organic matter, water and nutrients, disturbance. This position will be resident at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), located in scenic downtown Santa Barbara, California. NCEAS is a pioneer in open, team-oriented, and data-driven science, and has an inclusive community of postdocs, resident scientists, and analysts, as well as frequent visiting leading scientists and practitioners from around the world.

The Network Office of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network invites applications for 1-2 Data Analysts (Junior/Assistant Specialists) to engage in a portfolio of environmental synthesis research drawing on LTER and other data.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of NCEAS Senior Data Scientist, and in partnership with working group investigators, the LTER Data Analysts (Junior/Assistant Specialists) will participate in all stages of the synthesis process. The data analysts will develop data pipelines and reproducible analytical workflows to integrate heterogeneous sources of data (tabular, geographic, remote sensing, etc.) for LTER synthesis groups (https://lternet.edu/current-working-groups/). They will also gather, organize, and document the use of source data and assist scientists in preserving their scientific products (codes, data) and developing interactive data visualizations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- A baccalaureate degree, or equivalent experience, in environmental science, earth science, ecology, data science, computer science, or a related field.
Preferred qualifications
- Master’s degree in environmental science, earth science, ecology, data science, computer science, or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience in data analysis for junior specialist; 5 years for Assistant Specialist
- Clean, efficient coding abilities, preferably in R and/or Python Ability to communicate complex information using data visualization techniques
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, paired with the ability to develop creative and efficient solutions
- Interpersonal communication skills to collaborate with working group investigators
