This small set of slides depicts the current status of the Schoolyard LTER Program

This meeting was originally proposed as a post-Snowbird meeting by Baker and Henshaw, but was instead supported by the Network Office as part of the on-going IM mission.

Representatives from all 24 LTER sites attended and actively participated in the 2001 LTER Information Managers Meeting in Madison, WI. Other attendees included James Brunt, David Blankman, Owen Eddins, Troy Maddux, Bill Michener, and John VandeCastle from the Network Office , Judy Cushing and Erik Ordway from the Forest Canopy project, Matt Jones from NCEAS, Dick Olson from the Oakridge National Laboratory, Jens Schumacher from the German Biodiversity project at the University of Jena, and Phyllis Adams from the National Park Service.

Schoolyard Education of the Long-Term Ecological Research Program (SLTER)- Report to the LTER Coordinating Committee – Spring 2001

The National Advisory Board met for the second time 7-8 February 2001 in Arlington, VA.

The full LTER Technology committee, consists of one representative per LTER site. The committee met in 1999 to review in general, current technology needs across the Network. The 1999 LTER committee report contained a number of recommendations and provided the background for this meeting. In January of 2001, John Vande Castle, the committee chair, organized a subset of the committee as a working task group to revisit LTER technology issues. This report is a summary of discussions from the meeting of this group was held at Archbold Biological Station, January 7-9, 2001.

At the 2000 All Scientists Meeting, a subgroup of the education committe representing interests directly related to the Schoolyard LTER program, met and subsequently submitted a request to hold a post-ASM2000 workshop. This workshop was held Dec 1 and 2 at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.

LTER Databits – Information Management Newsletter of the LTER Network – Fall 2000 – Featured in this issue: According to most of the plenary addresses of the 2000 All Scientists Meeting in Snowbird, Utah, ecological researchers must think outside the box. Sociologists, modelers, climatologists, paleoecologists, remote sensing specialists, and science administrators all emphasized the need of ecological scientists to become comfortable with multiple disciplines and define questions that are significant in each of these fields simultaneously.

TOWARD A UNIFIED UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN ECOSYSTEMS: INTEGRATING SOCIAL SCIENCE INTO LONG-TERM ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH In pursuit of a thorough, scientific understanding of the world around us, biological ecologists and social scientists have each worked within their own academic disciplines to develop a wide range of empirical studies, methods, and models to identify key drivers, processes, and controls that regulate human behavior and interactions with the environment.

Representatives from 20 of the 21 LTER sites attended and actively participated in the 1999 LTER Information Managers Meeting, in Spokane, Washington, August 4-6, 1999. The Cedar Creek LTER was not represented for the second year in a row.

LTER Databits – Information Management Newsletter of the LTER Network – Fall 1999 – Featured in this issue: an overview of the recently funded NSF/KDI Biodiversity partnership plans in addition to a variety of approaches to metadata, conferencing, visualization and training. DataBits continues as a semi-annual electronic publication of the Long Term Ecological Research Network. It is designed to provide a timely, online resource for research information managers and to incorporate rotating co-editorship. Availability is through web browsing as well as hardcopy output.

The suggestion to NSF to create a special RFP for LTER education was not accepted.

The LTER Coordinating Committee held its April 22-24 meeting at the Rio Grande Plantation in Puerto Rico. Hosted by the Luquillo LTER site, this year’s spring meeting initiated a new format designed to foster increased focus on specific LTER issues and challenges.

Report from the LTER Climate Committee to the LTER Coordinating Committee Meeting Luquillo, Spring 1999. Prepared by David Greenland. (April 2, 1999)Doug Goodin (KNZ) will represent the Climate Committee at the Luquillo Meeting.

The LTER Technology committee met at the San Diego Supercomputer Center on March 26 and 27, 1999 to review LTER technological developments and provide recommendations for the LTER Network on needs for current and new technologies. Recommendations for LTER Technology Development related to National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), Information Technology (IT) issues, other potential funding opportunities.

Report from the Spring 1999 Education Committee Meeting

This is the report of the LTER National Advisory Board which met at the Sevilleta LTER site, New Mexico, on December 10 and 11, 1998. Membership of the Board is as follows: Ann Bartuska, U.S. Forest Service; Jim Beach, University of Kansas; Mary Firestone, University of California, Berkeley; Bill Heal, United Kingdom; Jim MacMahon, Utah State University; Bill Murdoch, University of California, Santa Barbara; Paul G. Risser (chair), Oregon State Univiversity; and Rebecca Sharitz, Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.

1998 presentation: Access to data and metadata distributed throughout collaborating national and international research sites is the focus of a development effort to support ecological research. The U.S. LTER (Long Term Ecological Research) Network informatics group is developing, along with national and international partners, a Network Information System (NIS). The mission of the working group is to design and develop a modular framework that builds on existing site functionality.
