LTER Executive Committee Meeting June 6-7, 1996 LTER Network Office Seattle,Washington – Here is a short summary of the general Exec. Committee. meeting (not necessarily in the order of occurrence).

The necessity of intersite research has driven the LTER mandate since intersite workshops in the early 1980’s. Since then the LTER data managers have been focusing on facilitating this research. Recently, the maturation of environmental information management, and advances in technology provide an impetus to accomplish more effectively the long-standing goal of facilitating intersite research (Stafford, et al. 1994). Although computers have come a long way, the fundamentals of managing research information and developing an appropriate system for management have remained relatively stable.

LTER Executive Committee Meeting – Washington DC January 11, 1996 Current budget scenarios from UNM and UW were distributed and logistical information taken care of, including the need to compress the meeting agenda to one day due to the weather.

This issue has a good balance of technical and non-technical features. There are reports on the use of interactive data access and data management policies within the LTER network. There are also plenty of hints on how to better use the computers at your site, including software reviews and technical hints. Finally, there are articles on conducting GPS campaigns and some solutions to common problems in scientific information management. There have also been some superficial format changes to DATABITS. Its now created using Framemaker software on a Sun Workstation.

tidbit of news, a good software package or a hardware hint that might be of some general interest, please send a paragraph or two to the editor for
inclusion in the next DATABITS.

The August 1989 LTER Data Managers’ workshop focused on developing solutions and avenues of communication to solve commonly experienced problems and meet future technological challenges.
