Featured in this issue: Theresa Valentine and Don Henshaw discuss their approach to the marriage of tabular and spatial data at the Andrews LTER. Barrie Collins gives his take on ArcIMS, ESRI, and his management philosophy. We are exposed to adding internet spatial visualization to environmental projects when Peter McCartney discusses three internet map applications produced by The Center for Environmental Studies, Arizona State University. Also in this issue a move towards maximizing the spatial aspect of the LTER Network is taken with a new Network-wide survey.

The 2003 LTER Information Managers meeting took place on September 22, 2003, in Seattle, Washington immediately following the LTER All-Scientists Meeting (ASM). The meeting was attended by representatives from 23 LTER sites and the LTER Network Office, and 8 invited guests from NSF and other programs.

Report of the LTER National Advisory Board for 2003.

Thank you for an excellent and productive meeting of the LTER National Advisory Board (NAB) in Albuquerque, Friday June 20. The members of the Board who were able to participate appreciate the effort you and your staffs made to ensure our comfort and to provide us with all of the information we needed. The following comments summarize our discussions, identify issues that we think should be resolved, and outline our plans for the continued work of the NAB.

A group of LTER PIs and Information Managers met at the Spring 2003 Coordinating Committee Meeting at Kellogg Biological Station to launch the effort toward form an LTER Network Information System. This report was presented to the Coordinating Committee.

Graduate Student Committee Annual Report April 17, 2002 Robert J. Daoust and Jennifer W. Edmonds Co-chairs. Since the last Co-ordinating Committee meeting, held in Tempe, we have successfully created an Official Guide for Graduate Student Site Representatives in the USA LTER Network.

Ecological Metadata Language (EML): Augmenting Research Tools and Capabilities, a quick introduction to Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT), a review of software tools for working with Extensible Markup Language (XML), an article on metadata management and what role Morpho and Metacat could play in an overall information management strategy at a LTER site, a review of several Email client applications, and an article about using the LTER LDAP Server.

1. NIS (Network Information System). Since its formation in 1988, the LTER IM (Information Mangers) Committee has worked to facilitate intersite research through the application of new techniques in computer science and the emerging field of ecoinformatics.

Workshop Report – French (Zones Ateliers) And United States (Long Term Ecological Research) Network-To-Network Collaboration In Long Term Integrated Environmental Research And Management Different areas in integrated environmental research and management (IERM) have converged over the last twenty years along three broad lines of issues and themes, as reflected in the United States (U.S.) by changes in the scope and kinds of questions addressed by many sites in the U.S.

Executive Summary – Beginning in 1998, the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network formally expanded its education efforts to include K-12 students and teachers mainly through the Schoolyard (SLTER) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Each LTER site designed its own program in relation to the ecological research conducted at the site and the particular need and resources of its local school district and community.

Representatives from all 24 LTER sites attended and actively participated in the 2001 LTER Information Managers Meeting in Madison, WI. Other attendees included James Brunt, David Blankman, Owen Eddins, Troy Maddux, Bill Michener, and John VandeCastle from the Network Office , Judy Cushing and Erik Ordway from the Forest Canopy project, Matt Jones from NCEAS, Dick Olson from the Oakridge National Laboratory, Jens Schumacher from the German Biodiversity project at the University of Jena, and Phyllis Adams from the National Park Service.
