Creating Inclusive Virtual Spaces

Chronicle of Higher education article with recommendations on centering accountability in DEI statements.

Virtual places of learning and work bring with them new challenges to maintaining inclusive and safe classrooms and workspaces. The rapid shift to virtual learning and working from home for large segments of the population in the US and globally in response to the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted some of these challenges, especially given little time for preparation. In order to address shifting workplace dynamics and accommodate individual needs in a time of heightened inequities, consider the following questions about differences in accessibility and impact. This webpage provides a sample of readings on important topics to keep in mind for inclusive learning and working spaces.

Anti-harassment/discrimination training materials

Chronicle of Higher education article with recommendations on centering accountability in DEI statements.

In support of the geoscience community’s attentiveness to developing a more inclusive culture that is resistant to harassment and discrimination, a collaborative effort to develop an anti-harassment/discrimination curriculum is underway. The curriculum is designed to be engaging and educative for undergraduate students, who may have little formal training in the terminology and concepts surrounding such topics, are likely to be unaware of policies and procedures regarding harassment, discrimination, and fraternization, are unlikely to know how to respond if they were to witness an incident of discrimination or harassment, and unlikely to know how to report incidents. Through this curriculum we seek to empower students, who might otherwise be vulnerable. We also designed this curriculum to be a practical and approachable resource to inspire, encourage, and enable program facilitators, faculty, and other community leaders to engage with their students around these important topics to change our community’s culture.

Typical physics Ph.D. admissions criteria limit access to underrepresented groups but fail to predict doctoral completion

Chronicle of Higher education article with recommendations on centering accountability in DEI statements.

Researchers are urging universities across the United States to find a new way to identify the next generation of scientists. A new study discovered that traditional admissions metrics for physics Ph.D. programs such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) do not predict completion and hurt the growth of diversity in physics, which is already the least diverse of the sciences.
